For the Mauritian tourism industry this year is not considered as favorable due to the economic crisis that affects the developed countries from where the major tourists are coming. Another adversity which the industry is facing is the fierce competitions among the tour operators. They all have to minimize their profits just for the sake to keep the operation of their business instead of closing their doors.
This year, the Bank of Mauritius provides Rs 40 billion for tourism revenue, representing an increase of nearly Rs 5 billion over the previous year. However, the crisis of the euro could project these revenues downward. According to the MTPA, the second quarter saw 189,180 tourists landing in Mauritius, a figure higher than in 2009. The arrival of tourists during the month of June is according to the seasonal trend of each year and that is still not the peak season.
A tour operator has reported a load factor not exceeding 50% in August. This is partly due to the fact that many of the tourists have chosen low cost accommodation such as bungalows, guesthouses, villas and small cottage instead of high class and expensive hotels.
In the first quarter of 2010, the rate of booking of hotel rooms was 67%, against 63% in first quarter 2009 and 79% in the first quarter of 2008. After a drop of 16% in 2009, the rate of hotels booking rose again in 2010. The Bank of Mauritius tourism receipts estimated Rs 3012 million in May 2010 compared to Rs 2422 million in May 2009, representing an increase of 24%.
249 971 tourists visited Mauritius in the first quarter of 2010, compared to 232,908 in 2009, generating Rs 2.4 million overnight stays and Rs 11 billion in tourism spending. Employment in the tourism sector has increased steadily from 2005 to 2008, from 25,377 to 28,753. In 2009, employment in tourism has dropped to 26,922 because of the economic crisis. The hotel facilities include 105 local hotels listed in March, representing a capacity of 11,564 rooms and 23,547 beds. 45% of the park consists of large hotels with a total of 47 establishments. Of the 105 hotels, five were not operational in March for renovation.
Planning a holiday is often more stressful than going back to work afterwards, but there are ways to make finding accommodation easier in Mauritius.
The first step is to decide what type of holiday it will be on the island of Mauritius. If it is a travelling holiday where luxury is not important, there is no need to pay for the more expensive hotels. If it is five star treatment that you require, then pampering must be paid for. Decide your needs before you go on holiday and always save extra money in case there are added expenses.
Mauritius is an island and most hotels are situated on the beach and just a few steps from the beautiful ocean. Sea facing rooms and suites are more expensive as it will cost more to wake up to the sound of the ocean. There are also choices regarding the type of room, depending on how many people are travelling to this island.
There is something for all budgets, but most hotels are either three, four or five star resorts. The level of service and facilities will differ slightly. At a three star resort, the room service will make your bed, but a five star resort will put chocolates on the bed with finest linen, for example. There are varying packages being offered and it is best to take an all-inclusive deal if you do not want to spend extra money at the resort. This deal generally includes all meals, drinks and airport transfers and the only time money is spent is on tours or tips to the staff.
Decide the aim of the holiday as it is pointless going to a golf resort if you do not play golf. If you are an active person, find a resort that offers water sports, nature walks and other activities. If you want to be pampered, go to a resort with a spa to be treated and spend all your time at the pool or beach bar to relax. If you want to party, choose a hotel that offers nightlife activities such as clubbing and live entertainment. If you are planning to get married, every hotel offers wedding packages and then you are settled for the honeymoon.
Surf the net to choose any hotel in an area of 1865km that the island covers with 330 km of coastline to sail, surf, swim or see. Most hotels have air conditioning as temperatures reach 34 degrees in summer and the coldest sea temperature is 27 degrees at the popular beaches of Grand Bay, Pereybere, Belle Mare, Blue Bay and Le Morne & Tamarin. After spending the days at the beaches or in the ocean, return to your hotel to eat delicious meals and relax in the privacy of your room until the next outing. Choose a hotel that is central to avoid too much travelling and read the reviews that have been posted by other travellers who have stayed there in order to know what to expect.
Golf Courses in Mauritius
Want to keep your golf game up to scratch on your Mauritius holidays? Here are four of the courses you simply must play.
Mauritius is one of the premier luxury holiday destinations, and it is now also making a name for itself as an unforgettable place to go on a golf holiday. The first course on the island opened in 1994, so the golfing scene here is still young, but plenty of other top quality courses have sprung up over the past decade, giving avid golfers on Mauritius holidays numerous options when it comes to picking a course. Many of the courses are attached to five star hotels that offer free and discounted green fees to their residents, so bear that in mind when choosing your accommodation on the island.
If you are keen to play a few rounds of golf during your visit to Mauritius, here are four courses that you shouldn’t miss out on…
One & Only Le Touessrok Golf Club
This is a tough course that is recommended for more experienced players, but if you’ve got a low enough handicap to take it on, you’ll be well rewarded. Designed by Bernard Langer around nine lakes, to stay out of the water you’ll have to play the game of your life, or just bring plenty of spare balls! But golfers looking for a challenge on their Mauritius holidays should accept no substitute – One & Only Le Touessrok is a must play.
Anahita Golf Course
For sheer beauty, there are few courses in the world that can match the Anahita. Designed by Ernie Els, this course only opened in the last few years but has already established itself as one of the best on the island. The scenery as you follow the coast is breathtaking, and the finish at the last hole is simply “to die for”.
Heritage Golf & Spa Resort
Attached to this excellent five star hotel is a delightful championship quality golf course that is one of the best on the island. With a combined backdrop of mountain and sea, you’ll have a hard time concentrating on the game at hand, but this expansive course deserves your attention and is a joy to play.
Belle Mare Plage Golf Club – The Legend
The very first (and, some would say, the very best) of the golf courses in Mauritius, The Legend more than lives up to its name. Host to the prestigious Mauritius Open, this superbly designed course includes forests, lakes and volanic rock in the landscape, and it is a treat for both top class golfers and keen amateurs on their Mauritius holidays. Belle Plage is also home to two more courses, The Links and Lemuria – both well worth playing.
Le Paradis Hotel Mauritius
Le Paradis is located on the “Le Morne” peninsula which is on the south west cost of Mauritius. It’s the type of hotel which does cost a bit more than the usual hotel but you are certainly treated like royalty. I would recommend it to any family to give it a go, we’re going back for sure.
In 2008 we stayed at the hotel Le Paradis. It came highly recommended from a friend of ours and it had great reviews on the internet. It is part of the Beachcomber hotel chain which have several hotels located in prime positions in places like Goa, Mauritius and the Seychelles.
The hotel foyer was absolutely fantastic with cedar wood pillars, beautiful indoor ponds and palm trees everywhere, it was almost a reception area inside yet outside. There was also an old brass telescope pointing up to the skies to allow you to do a bit of star gazing. The foyer also had some designer shops located in it.
We stayed in one of the private villas which stretched along a sandy beach, we were about 100 yards from the sea which stretched out as far as you could see. The villa offered us everything we wanted and more, plasma tv’s, playstation for the kids, indoor and outdoor showers, beautiful patio and three bedrooms furnished to a very high standard. Our en-suite bathroom had original stone walls and there was granite everywhere in all bathrooms.
We also had our very own golf cart to get around the hotel complex on and we had a private villa maid to cook for us and clean up. Absolutely everything was catered for, we woke up to a table full of breakfast, from bacon and eggs to all kinds of fruit. We use to have our breakfast outside on the patio overlooking the sea which was very shallow quite a long way out and was crystal clear.
We use to go down to the hotel pool during the day which had to be seen to be believed. Surrounded by palm trees and solid cedar wood pool loungers with waiters catering for your every need. We asked for a bowl of nuts one day and they returned with a large thick rough cut glass container with every kind of nut in it you could possibly think of. The bar was right next to the pool which served all kinds of beers, wines and cocktails as well as freshly made crepes with any kind of filling you wanted.
On an evening we ate at the hotel restaurant which was partly inside and partly outside. It was a self service restaurant which served anything from all kinds of locally caught fish, steak to lobster and pasta. the self service area was massive and I guess it had to be to fit in all of the different choices on offer every night. The desserts were to die for and so magnificently made with so much care.
